We moved to another office space yesterday, from the cosy blue and orange walls to a dead and dirty wall. It actually disappointed me a lot. I can’t even accept the fact that my environment totally downgraded from riches to rags. Imagine that!
Our company just underwent a major change. Our friends from the creatives department just became the basic foundation of another company. I’ll surely miss poking them every time I pass by. Our main problem right now is where to eat during lunch breaks since we don’t know where to eat together. Being part of a different company, though inside the same building, just won’t work.
With my experience in moving from one office to another I decided to share what I have learned. Here are some tips that you can consider on moving out of your office:
1. Don’t get attached. Never be attached to your place. No matter how cosy and how cool your place is don’t invest too much on things that will make it more appealing to the eyes. If you’ll move you’ll be disappointed. Consider all the creative efforts that you made to make it desirable to your eyes and how it costs to design your side of the office.
2. Don’t buy too much. In connection with the one above, don’t buy too much stuffs to make your office beautiful. Again, you’ll be disappointed once you left that place because you’ve been so attached to everything.
3. Don’t put all your personal things in your office. Try to separate your things for your work and for your personal use. As for me, when we moved I got a lot of stuff to take care of and redecorate. I also have a bunch of magazines and papers that’s too personal to be displayed on my desk. Try to put things where they should. Personal things should be, at least, in your personal office at home or at your room.
4. Eliminate unwanted things. If you’re staying for that office for quite a long time, I’m pretty sure you’ve earned too much magazines and papers in your drawer. You’ve kept CDs from your clients. Folders are just everywhere. When you’re moving your things to a new place, try to review all your stuffs and see what’s worth keeping. Throw away all those that you really don’t need especially those that has been there for 1 to 2 years already. It will not be of any use to you.
5. Recycle. Moving to another office means another investment. You have to buy new office supplies like folders and CD sleeves for your new transactions and records. Try to separate folders and CD sleeves as well as envelopes from your old stuffs which can actually be used again. This way you’re saving money, energy in buying new supplies and Mother Earth.
6. Try to organize things. In your new place you have to sort things. Folders should go together. Papers should be placed in one place. Pencils, ballpens, erasers and scissors should be placed in your pen holder or something which can hold them together. By just being organize you’ll find things easier when you need them. You can also track if you’re having too much papers and throw them away when you don’t really need them on your desk.
7. Familiarize yourself with all the new facilities. Of course, you don’t want to be looking for the comfort room for hours. You have to know the floor plan of your new office so that you’ll know where to go during lunch breaks, snack breaks and even when you just need to go to the comfort room. You have to know where the sockets are for you power source.
8. Clean clean and clean. Don’t just start working when everything is still a mess. I’m just not a fan of unorganized things. I work well when everything is pleasing to the eyes.
9. Splash a little color. If the environment is too plain for you, try to hang something on the wall. As for me, I found two photos which are really pleasing to the eyes while we are sorting stuffs which will be thrown away. I attached it to my wall and it creates an aura of interest to people who will visit me. It also adds interest to my place. Photos or paintings can actually make a dull room lively and full of spirit.
There you go. Hope you learned something from my experience today at work. If you have more tips regarding this topic feel free to add them through comments.
